Styling and Functionalism

The purpose of good design is not exhausted in making something simply "beautiful". Form based purely on aesthetic criteria inevitably results in a trivial, non-distinctive appearance.
Equally, reducing design to technical function does not "ennoble" it. Blunt functionalism is not the counterpart to ordinary styling, but rather a restriction of design in its broader possibilities.
