  • Bone fragments are encircled and secured using a metal wire, cable or band
  • The conventional method can restrict blood supply to the periosteum — a phenomenon known as the strangulation effect — which may delay healing in unfavourable cases
  • To address this drawback, the technique is supplemented by additional spacer elements that are threaded onto the wire loop and rest on the bone at discrete contact points only
  • A continuous constriction of blood circulation is thus avoided
