Briefing:

  • Further development of the R_1 design
  • Design adaptation to the underbody
  • Design adaptation to the tubular space frame
  • Design adaptation for aerodynamic optimisation
  • Design adaptation for compliance with various racing series regulations

Scope:

  • Sketches
  • CAS/CAD — creating a complete virtual model
  • Renderings
  • Quarter scale milled model (supervision)
  • Full scale milled model (supervision)

Project R_1, which began in 2002 at mtm in Wettstetten, was renamed Apollo in 2004.
Compared with the R_1 shown at the 2003 diploma show at Munich University of Applied Sciences, the design was modified in the following areas according to changed package specifications:

  • Overall width
  • Longer front overhang
  • Full coverage of the wheels by wheel arches
  • Rear spoiler and gurney flap
  • Larger rear diffuser
  • Large air outlets behind the front wheel arch
  • Large air outlet at the rear for betetr engine cooling
  • Reduced roof depression
  • Wheel arch adapted to tyres and camber
  • Rocker adapted to the underbody
  • Headlights adapted to carry-over components

With these modifications in the form shown here, the project left our area of competence.
First the GMG Sportwagenmanufaktur Altenburg GmbH was founded. Later the Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH, Altenburg, followed.
The latter developed the vehicle to series production. Compared with project R_1, considerably more emphasis was placed on the vehicle's racing capability whereas Styling aspects were neglected. Aerodynamics were designed in all areas for maximum downforce.
The Apollo could be purchased through Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur.
